Some basic benefits of juicing and blending include:

  • Increased energy and strengthened immune system
  • Fast rapid and easy absorption of nutrients into the body
  • Provides a healthy rest for your digestive system. The body needs to utilize energy to break down and digest food to turn it into liquid before it can be absorbed- with juices and smoothies there already a liquid!
  • Glowing skin and eyes, and stronger hair and nails, (when you clean out what’s on the Inside it portrays right through to the outside)
  • Also, you have the added benefit of consuming fruits and vegetables that you normally wouldn’t eat raw or whole a daily basis.
  • They provide a fantastic source of plant based proteins, vitamins, minerals and phytonutrients that our bodies need for health and vitality.

Do’s and Don’ts:

When blending or juicing, people can often to use too much fruit as opposed to plant based vegetables. Although fruits are an excellent source of Vitamins and Minerals especially Vit C, they tend to, however be high in naturally occurring sugars, so when consumed in bulk together (especially first thing in the morning) it can spike blood sugar levels giving an initial “high” energy rush, that’s often followed quickly by lunchtime sugar lows know as hypoglycemia.  This is why I am such a huge fan of the more plant based GREEN juices!

Why Predominantly Green?

Firstly, green vegetables are so important for the body. They are the most cleansing and detoxifying of plants and vegetables! They help to build up your own internal rainforest. Just like green trees cleanse the air by talking in the Co2 and releasing Oxygen, green vegetables act similarly in your internal body and organs. They cleanse, detoxify and nourish the body. They help strengthen the blood and the respiratory system and they are HIGHLY alkaline. We live in a world filled with mass produced foods and beverages, over processed and packed with chemicals, preservatives, and toxins. The majority of the food we are eating is highly acidic – the worst being meat, diary, refined carbohydrates and sugar. Therefore, it is so important to start introducing alkaline foods into our bodies to try and counteract how acidic our systems have become. Also, a very important fact to note is that NO DISEASE or NO CANCER will ever survive in an alkaline environment. Therefore, I can’t stress how vital it is to introduce greens into your daily diet.

I always recommend to use GREENS as the main base for making smoothies or juices.

Main source of readily available Greens includes –

  • spinach
  • kale
  • broccoli
  • celery
  • avocado (smoothies only – they don’t juice!)
  • parsley
  • coriander
  • Cucumber
  • Zucchini / courgette

I would always encourage the 3:1 ratio – 3 green vegetables: 1 fruit

I would generally use 3 greens veggies and sweeten with some fruit;

Examples of sweet fruits/veggies;

  • Apples
  • Berries
  • Kiwi
  • Pineapple
  • Pear
  • Carrot
  • Banana
  • Lemon/Lime
  • Root & Sweet veggies – Beets, Carrots, Ginger, Turmeric

Essential TIP:

An essential tip for any green smoothie is –  always add a little ginger and a squeeze of lemon. This is vital as the lemon/ginger combo really help to cut the taste of the greens. Sometimes if you’re not used to greens they can taste a little “earthy”.  Apples and pears are also good to make it more palatable. It is best to drink this nutrient filled powerhouse juice fresh and as soon as possible after making.

Superfoods and Add-On’s:

NO smoothie in my eyes is complete without the amazing SUPERFOODS! I know it can be deemed silly to call come foods super. Should all wholesome natural food be super in itself? However some foods do contain an extraordinary amount of anti-oxidants, phytonutrients and minerals above and beyond – so that is why they are termed ‘Superfoods’.

They are so good for your body in some many ways. They contain high levels of phytonutrients which our body need for vast range of reactions and actions including immunity, vitality, energy and detoxification.

Some Examples include:

Aloe Vera, Chia seeds, Goji berries, Spirulina, Chlorella, Maca powder, Cacao, Hemp Powder to name just a few!

Pop them into your morning smoothie and you won’t know yourself! You’ll be buzzing! There’ll be no need for that morning caffeine I promise!

You’ll start to feel cleaner, healthier, and more energized. As David Wolfe says “Green on the inside means clean on the inside!!”
